I hope you all had a great long weekend (Easter). You now get two more short weeks, as next Monday is a professional development day. This Wednesday at lunch, some of our students will be learning high jump, triple jump and long jump from the Kamloops Track and Field Club. This is a great opportunity to learn techniques that are used by provincial and national level athletes.

Many of the students have brought in labelled water bottles. I would like to see every student have a water bottle to stay hydrated, as the weather hopefully gets warmer and warmer.

If any parents have a truck, could you please check periodically at Gord’s Maytag for Fridge or freezer boxes. We need 3 or 4 boxes to make the props for our play. Thank you.

READING

The students continue to read Newbery and Battle books and complete book reports on each book. All students should have completed their first book report and be working on their second. The grade five students need to have their second book report completed by April 13th and the grade four students by April 16th. We will also be starting a new novel study this week called The Cay.

Here we are at the last week of March. It is a very short week for the kids. Don’t forget that Friday and next Monday are holidays. As well, Thursday the kids go home at 12:30 so I can speak to any parents I need to about the second report card. Wednesday is the Multi-Cultural Day. Please bring a food dish to share if you can. After lunch we will be going to the gym to perform and watch other classes do their dances. Your child is bringing home the second term report card today. If it does not show up, please ask your son or daughter where he or she has hidden it. Please sign the report card envelope and have your child return it to me asap. As the weather gets warmer, we will be outside almost every day. Please send a water bottle to school with your child’s name on it so he or she stays hydrated.

It’s been a long time. I was in Florida for two weeks visiting Mickey and the gang.

It’s going to start getting busy again very soon. Wednesday is Pizza day, if you ordered before spring break. It is also St. Patrick’s Day, so don’t forget to wear green…or you might get pinched. I expect the students to have proper gymstrip every day, as they will be doing some physical activity daily. I will also begin teaching them all the different track and field events, so they are prepared for the upcoming track meets. Grade 4s are bringing home their FSA results today. If it does not arrive, or you have any questions, please contact me.

READING

The students will be reading Newbery award winning books this term and doing extensive book reports on each book they read. The grade 4 students will have to complete one book report every two weeks and the grade 5 students will need to do one book report every 10 days. They can find these books in the classroom, our school library and at the public library. I will have a list of all the books to choose from in the classroom. The students will pick their first book tomorrow. The first book report is due March 22nd for grade 5 and March 26th for grade 4.

WRITING

The students will be learning how to write multi-paragraph stories this term. They were all given 14 story starters to choose from and a story map to plan their story ahead of time. The story map needs to be completed by Friday so they can begin the rough copies next week.

MATH

We are doing a measurement unit this term. Anything you can get them measuring at home will add to their learning. This week we are just focusing on units of length (metres, centimetres, and millimetres).

SCIENCE

The students are learning about weather.

FRENCH

Next Thursday (March 25th) there will be quiz on the subject pronouns, and the verbs avoir and etre.

That’s about all I can think of for now…..

A relatively slow week…..there must be something I’m forgetting.

Thursday night from 6:30p.m. -8:00p.m.  is family games night.

Friday @8:45 a.m. is our February Care assembly.

Friday afternoon I am throwing a hot chocolate afternoon for the kids. I’ll bring everything.

Also, I will not be here all next week…M-i-c-k-e-y M-o-u-s-e…so you will not be able to reach me until after spring break. Unless something crazy happens, Mr. Phillips will be in my class covering for me.

All of the assignments are done for the term, as I’m writing second term report cards before I leave. Everything from now on is third term.

READING

The students are completing a map of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which the two main characters lived in for a week. It is due Friday.

WRITING

Communicating Skills pages 85 A &B, 90, 91 A & B, and 93A will be completed by Friday. These pages are about suffixes.

SCIENCE

We are beginning a weather unit, so any knowledge you can share at home will be helpful.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Any students who have not presented their research projects will be presenting tomorrow.

I think that is all for now.

Wow, already half way through the month…crazy. This week is a short week. Today we have our third Young People’s Concert, called Project Soul. I think the students will really enjoy this concert. Remember that Friday is a Professional Development Day. The students get the day off while the teachers are off at various workshops.

The fairytales are all officially finished. The students worked very hard on these and should be proud of them. I have laminated and bound all of them. If the laminating plastic starts to come up, you can easily fix them at home by putting a thin towel or pillow case over the page and using an iron on low.

READING

We will be completing our novel this week. Chapters 9 and 10 are due by Thursday. There will be a final project the students will do about the novel. They will create a map of what they think the museum the kids stayed in looks like.

SOCIAL STUDIES

All posters were collected and about half of the presentations are completed. The rest of the presentations will be done next Tuesday.

SCIENCE

Tomorrow is the quiz on the two diagrams of the circulatory system.

That’s all for now.

This week the students must get their fairytale completely finished. Any who are not within 2 pages of being finished today will be staying in at recess, lunch and after school until they are finished. This means no basketball team or any other extra-curricular activities (including the dance Friday afternoon). We started this November 24th, so they have had plenty of time to get it finished.

Many of the students are also behind on their Social Studies research project. This was not an overly difficult project, yet many have not completed it yet.

FRENCH

There will be a quiz Monday on the 20 Salutations and Courtesy Phrases. The first 10 on the list I will say in French and the students need to write the English. The second 10 I will say the English and they need to write the French. Spelling Counts. I will give bonus marks if they get the accents right.

SCIENCE

Next Wednesday we are having a quiz on two diagrams of the circulatory system. One is the heart and the other is the full system. Spelling will count for this quiz.  The students have also been learning about blood and how it moves through the heart and the rest of the body.  I have been discussing this and testing them orally, but there will be no formal test on this system, other than the diagrams.
